Mitchell County (home to Bakersville and Spruce Pine) was hit pretty hard and details are still coming out of there. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the entire county is reeling and its people need our help.
One way to help from afar is to support the people and businesses there via donations or gift card purchases. In this guide, we’ve compiled as many of them as we can find.

- Community Organizations: The communities of Mitchell County are bound together by the businesses and organizations that serve them. These local community organizations are raising funds to help the recovery.
- Buladean Community Foundation: Buladean is a community in Northern Mitchell County and the BCF provides residents with services, events, and more.
- Downtown Spruce Pine Business Donations: Downtown Spruce Pine has set up fundraisers on both Paypal and Facebook.
- Toe River Arts Disaster Recovery Fund for Mitchell and Yancey County Artists: TRA is an integral arts supporter and is working hard to support members of their organization.
- Treats Studios Aid for Artists: Treats is a Spruce Pine-based studio that offers subsidized space for emerging artists and a visiting artist program.
- Helping Mitchell County Businesses Recover: The Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce will provide financial assistance to all businesses in Mitchell County (not just members) with these funds.
- Individual Businesses:
- Burnetteโs Country Store: We’re big fans of the family behind Burnette’s Country Store in Spruce Pine (and Burnsville). You can purchase a gift card to support them and when you visit, you’ll be able to take home some high-quality outdoor gear, some Amish furniture, or anything else they offer.
- In Tandem Gallery: This Bakersville Gallery thankfully survived the storm but is still limited by the lack of working infrastructure. They will be fulfilling online orders once a week.
- Penland School of Craft: In case you don’t know about this world-acclaimed school, read up on it. Then, come back to their website and help the physical cleanup and repairs, and help Penland pay its staff and artists who are scheduled to teach through a lengthy closure.
If you know any businesses that we missed, please kindly let us know in the comments and weโll investigate further. Also, if you know any business owners that have not set up fundraisers, please encourage them to do so or help them make it happen if you can.
