That includes play spaces in Raleigh, Durham (not Raleigh-Durham; that’s the airport!), Chapel Hill, and nearby towns and cities typically considered within the Research Triangle region, otherwise referred to as the Triangle.
No matter how your kids like to get their wiggles out, this list has everything you need to keep them and the whole family occupied.

We start this Triangle indoor play spaces guide with Chapel Hill. Before we share more about the NC Children’s Museum, we want to highlight the Morehead Planetarium on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill, as an honorable mention.

Formerly Kidzu Children’s Museum, the organization rebranded as the North Carolina Children’s Museum, found a permanent home in Chapel Hill (The Nest), and expanded into its second location (The Makery) at Boxyard RTP.
The Nest is designed for children from birth to age 5, with a variety of hands-on exhibits, art and maker activities, and sensory-friendly options to include all kinds of learners.
The Makery at Boxyard RTP is meant for upper-elementary kids, teens, “tweens,” and adults. You can craft with your own materials or explore the on-site “maker kits.” There are also themed workshops that focus on specific skills, led by instructors.
Tips: It’s required to register in advance before your visit to each space. Keep an eye out for the NCCM’s Mobile Museum, which might be coming to an event or party near you!
Best ages: The Nest is designed for children from birth to 5 years old. The Makery is meant for 6 years old to Adults, and visitors 14 years old and up can attend independently with a signed waiver.

Angel Island Fun Park is an excellent choice for families looking for a fun day running and exploring inside. The Durham location is the largest and features an adventure zone, go-karts, bumper cars, an arcade, and virtual reality.
One adult is included in each child’s admission ticket, too, which is something we love to see!
Tickets for the adventure zone start with a 3-hour session, and you can add on additional experiences like bumper cars, arcade, VR, and go-karts.
Angel Island in Cary is designed for kids ages 8 and under (4’6″ or shorter) and features a large ball pit, tunnels, trampolines, and soft, structured obstacles to climb on.
Tips: Grip socks are required for kids at either locations (you can purchase them at Angel Island if you forget!), and we’ve seen some great admission deals on Groupon!

Big Bear Bounce is an indoor inflatable playground designed for active family fun with giant bounce houses, obstacle courses, slides, and dedicated play areas for younger children.
We really loved this spot when our kids were toddlers because it is small enough that we can see them throughout the entire space while still getting lots of big energy out bouncing and playing.
This indoor playspace in Durham (near RDU Airport) is also a great spot for birthday parties! Open sessions give families a weather-proof option for energetic indoor play in the Triangle.

The Museum of Life and Science (MLS) is one of the largest family attractions in the Triangle, featuring 84 acres of interactive science, nature, and discovery experiences with both indoor and outdoor exhibits.
You could easily spend an entire day at MLS!
Families can explore hands-on exhibits, live animals, daily educational programs, and rotating exhibits, making it a year-round destination for indoor play and learning in Durham. While the outdoor exhibits get a lot of attention, we want to note that the indoor portion of this educational space is also excellent!
From a completely enclosed baby-and-toddler play section with STEM-based toys to an indoor natural area featuring owls, birds, snakes, and more. We’ve been members of this museum for 10 years and don’t ever see a time when we won’t be playing at MLS!
Tips: If you have an Associations of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited membership (NC Zoo, the Greensboro Science Center, the WNC Nature Center, etc), ask about discounts! There are also community days where admission is free for local residents.

Notasium is a one-of-a-kind music-themed play space in the Triangle! As a former music major myself, I was so excited when Notasium opened.
I’ve been taking our kids here to play ever since they were babies, and it’s been beautiful watching them grow up with access to manipulative play with different instruments.
Beyond the karaoke rooms and giant bounce house, the guitar-themed slide is always a big hit with our kiddos! They get to play and experiment with various instruments and ways to make sound while parents (responsibly) catch up on some emails or reading.

Nova Adventure Park is an 80,000-square-foot indoor adventure park in North Durham offering attractions like rock climbing, ninja-style challenges, and other active play experiences for kids, teens, and adults.
We checked out this indoor play space not long after it opened, on one of those hot Summer days when it was just too hot to have fun outside.
We loved not only how big the space was, but also how many comfortable couches there were throughout for parents to sit and supervise.
While ticketing is priced based on time, everything is included! And I love that parents are not required to purchase a ticket when supervising.
We found the space to be perfect for our kids at their current ages (9yo and 4yo). There is an excellent climbing area for our youngest, and a more difficult, harnessed obstacle course that our bigger kid absolutely crushed!
Nova Adventure Park in Durham, with a mix of physical challenges and family-friendly attractions, is a great destination for indoor fun, parties, and group outings in Durham.
Tips: Jump socks are required, so make sure to purchase some or bring your own. Make sure to fill out a waiver for everyone in your party.

OC Aerial is tucked away in an industrial park, with 16,000 square feet of climbing, obstacle courses, and slides.

Frankie’s Fun Park is an absolute gem and institution in Raleigh! So much so that I remember going to Frankie’s on my due date with my firstborn to try and convince her to come out and play!
Frankie’s Fun Park combines indoor and outdoor attractions, making it the perfect fit for families looking for more than one type of activity in a single stop.
For indoor play, the arcade, laser tag, XD Dark Ride, Drop Zone, bumper cars, and several thrill-style attractions make Frankie’s especially appealing for older kids, teens, and families.
The mini golf courses, Rookie Track, Road Course, and other rides also offer families options for different ages and comfort levels, though many attractions list height or age requirements on the Frankie’s website.
Tips: Frankie’s also has a Charlotte location, and others in South Carolina, so you may be near a Frankie’s without even knowing it!

This Raleigh amusement park also places a strong focus on birthdays, group outings, school events, youth groups, fundraisers, lock-ins, and corporate team-building.
They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays to accommodate groups and special events, which I think is pretty cool of them!
Tips: closed-toed shoes and waivers are required, and the soft play area is only for children 54 inches and under. You can often find a Groupon for Galaxy Fun Park, but please note that it is only valid Monday to Friday and is not accepted on weekends or federal holidays. They also have a cash discount too!

Greystone Recreation Center is truly a hidden gem for indoor play spaces in the Triangle!
For starters, it is part of the City of Raleigh Parks system and offers affordable indoor recreation for families year-round.
The center features a gymnasium, fitness room, classrooms, meeting spaces, and multipurpose activity areas that host youth sports, open gym, arts and crafts, fitness classes, and educational programs for all ages.
But what draws the families? The free indoor playground! It is on a soft rubber surface and features an 8-foot traverse rock-climbing wall.
Greystone Recreational Center is free and open to the public, but hours are subject to change, so make sure to call before making a special trip.

The indoor play museum is designed specifically for younger children, from birth to age 10, and features imaginative, hands-on play across two floors of exhibits.
Kids can build, create, pretend, and experiment through the exhibits while also having educational fun.
In addition to everyday admission, Marbles offers camps, preschool programs, field trips, birthday parties, family events, and special programming.

North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

Our go-to indoor space for children in the Triangle is the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (NCMoS). Not only is it my favorite price (FREE!), it is one of the largest natural history museums in the Southeast and has an excellent selection of both permanent and visiting exhibits.
The museum allows visitors to explore North Carolina’s wildlife, dinosaurs, marine life, geology, weather, space, biodiversity, and scientific research. How?
The NCMoS does all this through immersive exhibits, live animals, interactive displays, and educational programming. We have been to this museum (possibly) hundreds of times, and we always learn something new!
While admission to the permanent exhibits is free, some special exhibitions and theater experiences require separate tickets and are absolutely worth it. We’ve attended several of their ticketed exhibits, and they are always so well done, and the staff is fantastic to interact with.

Urban Air Adventure Park is a trampoline and adventure park with attractions that go beyond traditional jumping.
It’s one of the bigger indoor play spaces in the Triangle for families who want a mix of climbing, jumping, thrill attractions, and active play under one roof. We love Urban Air so much that our oldest asked to spend one of her birthdays here!
Which attractions you have access to depends on the height requirements and the wristband package you choose to purchase.
We found that our youngest was limited in what he could do, but not so much that he didn’t still have fun. Think ropes courses, zip lines, tube playground, trampolines, bumper cars, and so much more!
We found Urban Air to be one of the more expensive indoor play spaces in the Triangle, so make sure to check their website for deals or consider an annual membership if you plan to visit more often!

Happy Feet Planet offers a safe, clean, and adventure-filled environment where children aged 6 months through 12 years old can play.
This three-story indoor playground has separate play zones designed for different developmental stages, allowing crawlers, toddlers, and older children.
Families enjoy unlimited play time, while dedicated staff clean, inspect, and maintain the equipment daily.
While cleanliness should be a simple standard, I want to point out just how impressed I was with Happy Feet Planet. The staff was diligent in cleaning the surfaces frequently; in fact, several times during our 90-minute visit.
As a parent with young children, I’ve avoided indoor play spaces that weren’t as clean as they should’ve been, so I’ve really felt assured of the cleanliness at Happy Feet Planet!
Tips: Reservations are definitely needed for weekends!

Over The Moon Play Space

I cannot tell you how much we love Over The Moon Play Space!
It is hands down one of our favorite indoor play spaces in the Triangle for both kids and working adults who need to get some emails answered.
This 11,000-square-foot, space-themed playground features a custom rocket-ship play structure, a low-ropes challenge course, Mars-inspired climbing domes, a 24-foot-wide bouldering wall, tumbling equipment, and STEM-focused building activities.
Side Note: A friend of NC Tripping painted the custom space mural at Over the Moon.
There’s also a dedicated baby and toddler zone, a private mothers’ room, plus coffee, snacks, espresso drinks, Wi-Fi, and comfortable seating for caregivers.
The facility offers more than just open play.
Families can also book birthday parties, summer camps, track-out camps, and multi-visit play passes.
Overall, the focus remains on encouraging children to climb, explore, build, and imagine in a safe indoor environment while parents can relax nearby.
Tips: For the best experience, book your open play session online before visiting; reservations are required and can be rescheduled up to 2 hours before your visit. Socks are required, but if you forget some, they have some you can borrow! Also, leave room for a sweet treat afterward because Andia’s is right around the corner.

Piney Town Playhouse

Piney Town Playhouse is an imaginative indoor play town designed specifically for children from birth to age 7.
The name “Piney Town” pays tribute to Fuquay-Varina’s original name, Piney Woods, reflecting the owners’ desire to create a community-centered gathering place for local families.
The space features nine themed playhouses, including a grocery store, a doctor’s office, a construction site, a theater, a play home, and more. There are also great play areas for younger children, including a dedicated toddler area, train and LEGO tables, dress-up stations, and sensory-friendly activities.
Parents can enjoy coffee and espresso drinks while their children explore and play.
Tips: Reservations are highly encouraged, as attendance is capped at 30 children to create a less crowded experience, though walk-ins are accepted when space allows. Play sessions last two hours, and socks are required for both children and adults.

Town of Fun offers a unique take on indoor play spaces in the Triangle by combining imaginative play with educational experiences.

Woodplay of the Carolinas is best known for its premium outdoor playsets, but families may not realize it also offers a large indoor play space (aka the Party Room) where kids can climb, jump, and explore year-round!
The facility features a 10,000-square-foot showroom filled with wooden playsets, Springfree and BERG trampolines, basketball goals, and a dedicated toddler area, allowing children to test the equipment before families make a purchase.
Tips: Open Play is on weekdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and costs $9 per child. Adults are free, and children must wear socks.
