Where Is Onslow County?

Onslow County is in Eastern North Carolina, covering roughly 767 square miles, with about 30 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline stretching along North Topsail Beach and the New River Inlet.
The county is about an hour north of Wilmington and just south of the region commonly known as the Crystal Coast. Onslow is known for its beautiful coastline, rich fishing heritage, and proximity to Camp Lejeune, one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the U.S.
The following North Carolina counties border Onslow County:
- Carteret County (East): Home to Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, and more, Carteret is closest to Swansboro via NC-24.
- Duplin County (Northwest): to the northwest, known for its vineyards and farmland.
- Jones County (North): to the north, separating Onslow from more inland, rural areas.
- Pender County (Southwest): to the southwest, home to Surf City, Topsail Beach, and Burgaw.
And of course, to the south and southeast, Onslow County meets the Atlantic Ocean, with North Topsail Beach marking its coastal edge.
If you’re traveling to the area from Raleigh, the trip is approximately two and a half hours, and much of the drive is along I-40. Beyond I-40, U.S. 17, NC 24, and NC 70 are major roads that’ll get you around Onslow County.
If you’d like to plan your trip visually, you can do so using our Eastern North Carolina Map.

Things to Do at North Topsail Beach

Based on our experiences in the area, North Topsail Beach is the quietest stretch of Topsail Island. It’s perfect for swimming, shelling, and catching a sunrise.
One event in North Topsail Beach that we mentioned earlier, but would like to highlight more here, is the Ocean City Jazz Festival, which takes place every July.
The festival honors Ocean City, a community founded in 1949 and the first place in North Carolina where African Americans could buy and own coastal property (15 years before the Civil Rights Act). Today, Ocean City is an official African American historic site in Onslow County, and the music that fills the air each summer continues to honor its incredible legacy.

Founded in 1880 and named for its rich soil, the town continues to pay homage to its agricultural roots. Learn more about the history at the Onslow County Museum (301 S Wilmington St, Richlands, NC), where exhibits share stories from the county’s earliest settlements to the present day.
Just down the road, Huffman Vineyards (221 Haw Branch Rd, Richlands NC) is a tobacco field transformed into a vineyard, offering a variety of wines that range from sweet muscadines to crisp, dry whites. Enjoy a tasting at the bar or sip a glass on their peaceful outdoor patio.
Located just outside of Richlands in Beulaville is Mike’s Farm (1600 Haw Branch Rd, Beulaville, NC), a beloved family destination known for its Christmas dinner shows, family-style Southern food, and a huge North Carolina product barn.
We loved wandering around the property, and our little one couldn’t get enough of the friendly goats, chickens, peacocks, and other farm animals. Be sure to stop by the on-site bakery and country store, where you can sample homemade jams and grab a warm cheese danish (trust us, you’ll want to take a few jars home).

Sneads Ferry
Once a quiet fishing village, Sneads Ferry has evolved into a vibrant coastal community that continues to celebrate its maritime heritage. Often called the “Gateway to North Topsail Beach,” this town is renowned for its shrimp fleet, local seafood, and laid-back atmosphere.
Things to Do in Sneads Ferry

Go on an oyster farm tour in Onslow County is one of the most unique and educational experiences in North Carolina! We have done tours with both Hold Fast Oyster Company (supplier of oysters to Wilmington restaurant icon Seabird) and Ghost Fleet Oyster Company, and they are both incredible.
With both companies, you’ll head out on the water to see firsthand how oysters are cultivated and harvested in the New River estuary.

Along the way, about sustainable aquaculture practices, the vital role oysters play in keeping our waterways clean, and how the coastal ecosystem supports this thriving local industry. Of course, the highlight comes when you get to shuck and taste oysters straight from the river: briny, fresh, and as local as it gets.
And if you love coastal seafood experiences, plan your visit around the Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival every September, a beloved tradition that’s been celebrating the town’s fishing heritage for decades.
The festival features parades, live music, local art vendors, and an abundance of shrimp, making it a must-attend event for anyone who loves authentic coastal North Carolina culture.

Hammocks Beach State Park

Hammocks Beach State Park is just a 10-minute drive from Swansboro and easily one of our favorite things to do in Onslow County.
Start your trip at the Visitor Center (1572 Hammock Beach Rd, Swansboro, NC), where you’ll find helpful staff, maps, and exhibits that showcase the geography and wildlife of North Carolina’s barrier islands.
If you’re ready to hit the water, Paddle NC is conveniently located right outside the Visitor Center and offers rentals for single and tandem kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes. They also do eco tours at Hammocks Beach State Park, as well as eco and sunset tours at Carolina Beach and Topsail Beach.
I spent a few peaceful hours paddling solo along the Intracoastal Waterway and Queen’s Creek, and it was the perfect mix of adventure and calm.
